A Little Good News From UPS

While trying to justify the annual UPS price increase (happens every December) we were pleased to actually get a little good news from UPS.

Starting in 2020, UPS will offer regular ground service to a large number of metropolitan areas. This is long overdue.

In the past, Saturday delivery service was limited to a small number of areas, required paying for expedited shipping and added a Saturday delivery surcharge.

All of that is going away, starting tomorrow.

This is, no doubt, a response to very aggressive delivery services now being offered by the Postal Service and by Amazon Prime. Both of these services not only offer Saturday delivery at no additional cost, but even have limited Sunday delivery as well.

Now, when computing delivery times, a lot of our customers will only need to consider Sunday as a non-business day.

Curious about whether this service is available in your area? Click here and take a look at the list.

Gaff Tape Network-Gaffers Tape On Facebook

We’ve been both amazed and amused by how much interest there is in gaffers tape on Facebook.

One of our favorite groups is is the Gaff Tape Network.

It will almost always give you a laugh and lighten the burden of having to tape down a huge show.

Share your best and worst gaff tape images and tips.

It is a private group, so you’ll need to request membership, but that only takes a minute and you’ll be glad you did.

Procell Is At It Again

Duracell has yet again rolled out a new color scheme for its line of Procell alkaline batteries.

We’re not sure what they are up to, but the look is a radical change from the last two paint schemes.

When a company has as durable an image as the coppertop, you would think that long term brand building would be part of their plan. If it is, it certainly does not include the actual image of the product.

We have just started receiving product with the new look and should be shipping them in the next week or so.

As best we can tell, the specs are unchanged. You can check the data sheet by clicking here.

You Can Have It In Any Color As Long As It Is Black

Unlike a lot of online companies, we still have a toll free phone number (four, actually) and we still answer the phone.  The questions we get are almost always more easily answered online through our content-rich web sites, but we are happy to take the calls.

The most common question, by far, relates to gaffers tape, and the three different kinds we sell.  It is a good question and it is worthy of a detailed blog post.  Here goes…………..

Shurtape 665 is the best known brand of gaffers tape.  It was known as Permacel 665 for many years before the brand was sold to Shurtape and it is the gold standard for utility grade gaffers tape.  It can trace its lineage directly back to when Johnson and Johnson invented the original gaffers t ape.

We sell it to Broadway tours, major concert producers and some of the biggest video production companies in the country.   If consistency is more important than price, then Shurtape 665 is guaranteed to get the job done.

Pro Gaffer, from Pro Tapes and Specialties, has become the most popular tape we sell and is the value leader in its field.  It’s specifications are identical to Shurtape 665 and performs comparably in most applications.  It is priced about 10% less than 665 and is available in lots of colors.

Shurtape Professional Grade (formerly known as Permacel 672) has a specially formulated adhesive that is designed to work in extreme temperatures.  Production pros turn to Professional Grade when they are working outside in cold temperatures or when they need a tape product to use around hot stage lights.

We offer all three brands in multiple widths and, like everything else we sell, all our gaffers tape is sold with a “satisfaction guaranteed” promise.

Here’s Some Winterizing Tips-Lots Include Duct Tape

Duct Tape From BuyTape.comThis is the time of year when power companies (at least the responsible ones) help their customers with tips on keeping their homes warm.

Some are simple and almost free.  Others will cost you something, but you can easily recoup those costs with energy savings, especially if they can be used for more than one year.

One simple one is a “draft stopper” which involves wrapping up a towel with duct tape and pushing it against the bottom of an exterior door.  The expansion of the towel into the opening fills the draft space and the coating on the duct tape almost completely stops the air flow.

Instant Dry Paint? It’s Called “Gaffers Tape”

blue gaffers tape from buytape.comTouch ups on trade show booths  or on a video set with spray paint can’t be done onsite, since the use of aerosol sprays isn’t allowed on most show floors.  It can get messy quickly and even damage other show material

Booths and displays in high traffic areas get dinged and bumped into and it can be a challenge to keep things looking fresh, particularly when a show runs for several days.

Cameras and audiences can quickly be distracted by a shop worn or damaged set piece is in plain view.

Quick color matched repairs can be achieved with colored gaffers tape and nothing is released into the air when you do it.

Here is a link to gaffers tape in over  19 different colors and four different widths.

That Other Marley Ghost

ghostWe’re all familiar with Jacob Marley, the character from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Marley is that ghost that confronts Ebenezer Scrooge. He is the one that  introduces him to the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future.

We’re confronted with the Ghost of Marley almost every day, but when we say “Marley” we’re talking about a vinyl dance floor.

Marely is a “ghost” because the company that made Marley branded floors has been out of business since 1978.

Customers regularly call looking for tape for their Marley floor, even though we know that they don’t have a floor that was actually made by Marley.  They’ve been gone for decades.

Fortunately, for them, our vinyl dance floor tape will work on all portable vinyl dance floors.  Yes, we do speak Marley.
