Mic Stand Slipping? Try Gaffers Tape

Mic Stand From GoodBuyGuys.com

Over time, microphone stands, particularly inexpensive ones, lose their ability to hold a heavy microphone at a fixed height.

What happens is that the soft bushing that is compressed when the stand clutch is tightened loses its structural integrity and its ability to clamp the upper tube in place.

It can be more than a little embarrassing for a singer to take a spin, only to return to the mic with it pointing to his waist.

You can prevent this with a small strip of gaffers tape.

Once the stand is at the right height and the clutch is tightened, put a strip of tape around the smaller upper tube, directly above the clutch.

This will hold the mic firmly at exactly the height you need with no slipping.

Be sure to remove the tape before collapsing the stand for transport. Forcing a strip of tape into the clutch mechanism can create a sticky mess.

No Cutting Tools Required

scissors from goodbuyguys.com

One of the great features of gaffers tape that regularly gets overlooked is the ability to tear it-No cutting tools required.

Because gaffers tape is made from woven cloth, it will tear in strips, both horizontally and diagonally, to any size you need.

This means that you can carry one less tool and worry less about cutting yourself.  No matter what size piece of tape is required, you can quickly and easily tear off just that amount and get a smooth, clean edge, not something ragged.

Once you tear it, because gaffers tape is 11 mils thick, you can easily find the leading edge again when you need a new piece.

Gaffers Tape-The Universal Adapter

If you’ve spent much time on a stage or a video set, you know that there is no such thing as “universal” sizing for hardware.

The difference between standard and metric is only the beginning. Trying to make two different manufacturers equipment work together can be a huge headache.

Quite often you have to come up with your own solution for a one time fix.

A good example is the fitting a microphone accessory like a mic clip to a stand that has a different standard thread. If it won’t fit properly, you may have to use tape. You know you need to create a fix that is camera or audience invisible, and that can be a challenge. Instead of taping the clip to the stand, see if you can apply tape to the inside (thread) of the oversized clip so that it can be placed on the stand firmly.

Same for fitting a camera to a tripod. Concentrate on where the camera meets the tripod and see if you can create temporarily compatible sizes.

Since gaffers tape has an adhesive that is designed to remove cleanly, your post show clean up should be quick an simple.

Here’s Some Winterizing Tips-Lots Include Duct Tape

Duct Tape From BuyTape.comThis is the time of year when power companies (at least the responsible ones) help their customers with tips on keeping their homes warm.

Some are simple and almost free.  Others will cost you something, but you can easily recoup those costs with energy savings, especially if they can be used for more than one year.

One simple one is a “draft stopper” which involves wrapping up a towel with duct tape and pushing it against the bottom of an exterior door.  The expansion of the towel into the opening fills the draft space and the coating on the duct tape almost completely stops the air flow.
