What Is An Edison Connector?

Why that wall outlet is called “Edison”

Thomas Edison was responsible for hundreds of great inventions, but none have had the “staying power” of his original design for electrical outlets and connectors. New construction, even today, is designed to accomodate the connectors that Edison invented a century ago.

The basic design of parallel blade connectors and matching receptacles has survived a revolution in electrical and electronic components, yet continues to deliver standard AC current to millions of devices.

During the 1950’s and 1960’s a third “U” grounding prong was added, but the old style two conductor parallel blade plugs will still work in grounded outlets being manufactured today.
